Chattanooga Elevator First Floor

Many people believe that the elevator was invented in the 1800’s when the construction industry was revolutionized with the production of iron and steel. The great sky scrapers of that age would have been virtually unusable without an elevator. However, what most do not know is that the elevators of the industrial revolution are referred to as "modern elevators". Why? Because there is evidence that indicates elevators were in use even during the building of the great Egyptian pyramids. These earlier elevators were rudimentary lifts that operated similar to our current hydraulic type elevators except they were powered by water.

Now those would have been a blast to ride!
